Australian police foil an alleged terrorist attack being planned for Christmas Day.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says police uncovered a plot to detonate improvised explosive devices in the popular Federation Square section of Melbourne, on or around Christmas Day.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Dec.
23, Turnbull claims it's "one of the most substantial terrorist plots that has been disrupted in the last several years.
" Police arrested seven suspects before dawn Friday morning, but later released two of them.
Five premises are now being searched.
Australia's federal police commissioner adds "there is no question in our mind" the plot was inspired by ISIS.
Authorities are encouraging the public to go about their daily business and continue to gather in celebration of Christmas and New Year's Eve.
But, Australians can expect to see an increased police presence — nationwide — throughout the holidays.
