Hello I'm Martin Parkinson, Secretary of theDepartment of the Prime Minister and Cabinet Australians today live in a time where theinternet offers us great oppurtunities to evolve and expand our businesses, to developand export new products, to engage with our social and community interests, and to improveour way of life.
But to make the most of these opportunities, people need to trust our networks.
Last year, my department undertook a reviewof Australia's cyber security in response to the ever changing threats to Australia'sinterests in cyberspace.
But also, to take advantage of the rapidlygrowing economic opportunities available to us if we can get cyber security right.
After consulting with more than one hundred and ninety Australian and international organisations, the Government has developed its National Cyber Security Strategy.
Those we spoke to want the Government to show national leadership on cyber security, to work with business leaders, industry and academia, to build strong cyber defenses.
And to increase the national effort to fight cyber crime.
The National Cyber Security Strategy builds on our existing capability and reputation to ensureAustralia can be a world leader in cyber security.
From understanding and defeating cyber threats, to encouraging innovation and education.
The Strategy maps out how the Government willjoin with the private sector and research community and the Australian people, to protect our networks and help us ensure that an open, free and secure internet fosters the innovative, entrepreneurial, knowledge based economy that will drive Australia's future prosperity.
I present the Strategy to you, to all Australians and our international partners, and look forward to an Australia that is more cyber secureand more cyber savvy.
