Alcohol Banned After Australian Beachgoers Leave 33,000 Pounds of Trash

A Sydney beach was completely trashed after a Christmas Day celebration, and now alcohol will be banned at the popular site for the rest of Australia's summer.

A crowd of 10,000 gathered at Coogee beach on Sunday, Dec.

25, leaving behind more than 33,000 pounds of trash.

Many on social media blamed backpackers for the mess.

The beach is near the town of Randwick just southeast of central Sydney.

On Monday the city council announced its decision to ban alcohol.

Mayor Noel D'Souza wrote in a statement on Facebook: "The poor and inappropriate behavior of a few on Christmas Day have forced [the] council to introduce a total alcohol ban for the area.

" The ban will extend from Dec.

29 through February.

Alcohol restrictions were put in place at two nearby parks in Sydney in an effort to reduce alcohol-related incidents.

Drinking curfews were also put in place at beaches in Melbourne last January.
